If there’s one thing I can glean from this album, it’s that Guster loves “additional percussion” and doesn’t care much for a traditional drum set. Basically every song has bongos or some other hand drum. There’s more classic kick and snare sometimes, but they’re absolutely buried in the mix. It’s an interesting switch up for what is otherwise a pretty standard late 90s pop rock band. It definitely sets them apart from everyone else. I don’t think they do a whole lot otherwise to set themselves apart though. I never really got hooked by any of the songs, though nothing was bad either.
